A man who law enforcement officials are calling a sovereign citizen is behind bars in Pennsylvania following a triple murder in Morgan County, WV. According to Morgan County Sheriff Vince Shambaugh the suspect Erick Shute had filed several complaints against the victims including property disputes. The three male adult victims along with one who survived were clearing wood and debris from a roadway that was adjacent to Shute’s property. According to Shambaugh, Shute then ambushed the men, shooting them from a wooded area with an AR-15 rifle. One man was able to flee the scene. Shambaugh says other than being shaken up from the incident he is ok. Shambaugh says Shute’s property was basically a weekend home. Shute had property in New Jersey and Pennsylvania as well. Shambaugh says Shute posted to social media that the shooting was in self defense. Shute was then arrested in Pennsylvania shortly before midnight. Shambaugh says this is the first triple homicide he can remember in Morgan County. He says it is a small community and the victims were well known. Shambaugh says he belives Shute had a compound he was building on the Great Cacapon property. Shambaugh says the investigation is ongoing.
